This Cistern is one of the largest ever built by the Romans and one of the biggest in the ancient Western World after the one in Instanbul. It’s located in Castellone Medieval area, just few steps away from Piazza Sant’Erasmo.
The inner structure reveals four lines of pillars dividing the interior into four aisles covered by cross vaults. The water filling the Cistern came from the spring located on a hill nearby called Santa Maria la Noce and, in the roman age, was providing water supply for the ancient roman city.
The inner dimensions of the structure are impressive: being 63 metres long and 24 metres wide it covers an area of nearly 1100 square meters and about 7000 cubic meters in volume.
